Student Hunger Advocacy Coalition

Sign Up to Volunteer!

The “Student Hunger Advocacy Coalition” (SHAC) provides unique and educational volunteer opportunities for students between the ages of 6 and 19. Students explore the causes and consequences of food insecurity and the multitude of challenges our neighbors face daily. The program is designed to encourage students to learn how their unique abilities and talents can be used to help others.

The objective of SHAC is simple: to generate a new wave of volunteers by engaging our newest generations of future leaders of change. Long Island Cares connects with more than 230,000 Long Islanders who receive assistance within our network of human service agencies. We recognize how powerful student activists are, and we steward those interested in ending hunger on Long Island.

Special Notice: Veteran’s Garden

Students interested in working at the Veteran’s Garden must commit to the entire season to ensure consistency in pairing with veterans. Once paired, students must stick with their commitment until November, with no backup coverage available.

Through SHAC, students can work alongside staff and other volunteers to engage in service activities, including, but not limited to:

• Hunger 101 Education Workshops
• Food Drives and Community Events
• Working in our Client Choice Pantries (Long Island Cares First-Stop Food Pantries)
• Gardening Projects
• Job Readiness Workshops for Teens
• Cooking and Nutrition Workshops
• Virtual Projects
