Baxter’s Pet Pantry operated by Long Island Cares, Inc. – The Harry Chapin Regional Food Bank, which was developed in partnership with the Animal Relief Fund Inc. (ARF), makes free pet food and pet supplies available to pet-owning families in need.* The pet food and supplies are supplied by ARF and many pet food corporations.
Initiated as a result of 2009 media coverage of families putting their pets up for adoption as a result of not being able to afford pet food, veterinary care and/or other services, Baxter’s Pet Pantry also offers toys, pet clothes, feeding bowls, cat litter and other pet supplies. Free pet food is available to pet owners through many of our local member agency food pantries.
Long Island Cares, Inc. is very grateful to our corporate partners at PETCO, Pet Supplies Plus, Target, VCA Animal Hospitals, Pet Smart and Walmart for their very generous monthly donations of pet food and toys to Baxter’s Pet Pantry. You can support our pet pantry by visiting any one of PETCO’s stores on Long Island to purchase a dog or cat pet gift bag, or any pet food, which are all donated to Long Island Cares.

The Caplan-Bensley Foundation provides dog food to families who are struggling, and thereby saving the life of a dog in need. We understand that when people experience hardships, they may be forced to choose between providing for themselves, their loved ones, or their pet. By giving dog food to those in need, Jazzy’s Place provides an immediate solution to people facing this dilemma. Long Island Cares, Inc. is grateful to The Caplan-Bensley Foundation for their very generous grant in the amount of $5,000 which will support our plans to develop a free-standing Baxter’s Pet Pantry including, a special section for Jazzy’s Place at our newest satellite location in Lindenhurst.
Hard times can happen to anyone and just because you or your family find yourselves struggling does not mean that you should be forced to give up your pet in the process. This is why Long Island Cares offers Baxter’s Pet Pantry to help families with not only pet food, but also toys, clothes, and other supplies needed to take care of a pet. This program is run in partnership with the Animal Rescue Fund which enables Long Island Cares to distribute these supplies through our network.
Long Island Cares also offers a free basket of supplies to those who serve in the armed services when they adopt an adult dog from a local animal shelter. It’s our way of saying thank you for all that you do in defending our nation and keeping an animal safe.
We also offer support to local animal shelters. We provide pet food, supplies, and more via donations to Long Island’s may pet shelters and offer delivery directly to these shelters if need be. To get more info about this program or to get a tour of our warehouse, please contact Jessica Rosati, Ph.D., Chief Programs Officer at: 631.582.3663 Ext 109 or email: [email protected]
