The Alarming Reality of Food Insecurity Among New York State Adults

By Eric Dahl

A recent report from the New York State Department of Health has brought to light a sobering reality: approximately one in four adults in New York State are facing food insecurity right now. This issue, characterized by limited access to adequate food due to economic constraints, plagues numerous counties across the state. The report’s levels vary, ranging from 11.2% to a staggering 39% of adults experiencing food insecurity.

While these may appear as numbers on a page, they represent our real-life neighbors. The impact of food insecurity is far-reaching, affecting the health, well-being, and vitality of many New Yorkers. Those grappling with food insecurity are more likely to report chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, asthma, cancer, and other health issues. Hunger, stress, and malnutrition – stemming from a lack of access to sufficient food – take a toll on both body and mind, leading to anxiety and depression.

As an organization committed to ending hunger in Nassau and Suffolk Counties, Long Island Cares stands in solidarity with the State Health Department’s commitment to fighting hunger. Our mission to support our neighbors facing food insecurity has never been more vital.

State programs, such as the Hunger Prevention and Nutrition Assistance Program, Nourish New York, WIC, Commodity Supplemental Food Program, and the Child and Adult Care Food Program, all play an important role in providing nutritious meals, fresh produce, and essential support to thousands of individuals and families in need. These initiatives are crucial steps toward ensuring food access and alleviating the burden of hunger on our communities.
