At Long Island Cares, we know that pets are more than just animals—they’re family. That’s why Baxter’s Pet Pantry exists: to ensure that no one has to choose between feeding themselves and feeding their beloved companions.
Baxter’s Pet Pantry is one of the only pet food pantries of its kind on Long Island. What began small has grown into a lifeline for thousands of families who are facing financial hardship but refuse to let their pets face food insecurity.
Baxter’s isn’t just a distribution point for dog kibble and cans of cat food. It’s a holistic support system that helps people stay together with their pets during difficult times. We provide food for a variety of animals—dogs, cats, birds, hamsters, and even reptiles. Pet toys, treats, and basic supplies like litter and leashes are also available, thanks to generous donations from individuals and pet supply retailers.
We know that pets provide emotional support, unconditional love, and comfort in times of stress—especially for families navigating food insecurity. Keeping pets at home supports mental well-being, especially for seniors, children, and individuals living alone.
What makes Baxter’s Pet Pantry truly unique is its ability to fill a gap that few others do. Many traditional food pantries can’t accommodate pet food, and for some families, the cost of feeding a pet can become overwhelming. Baxter’s ensures that our neighbors don’t have to make heartbreaking decisions—like surrendering their pet to a shelter—because of temporary hardship.
Through Baxter’s, Long Island Cares is not only addressing food insecurity but also preserving the special bond between people and their pets.
Like all our programs, Baxter’s Pet Pantry is powered by community generosity. Local businesses, veterinary offices, schools, and caring individuals donate pet food and supplies throughout the year. Our volunteers help sort and distribute these items at our satellite locations, mobile outreach sites, and pet pantry events.
