About Us

Long Island Cares, our work is guided by a clear mission and a shared set of values. Together, they shape how we respond to food insecurity across Long Island and how we partner with the community to create lasting solutions.

Our Mission & Vision

To bring together all available resources for the benefit of the hungry and food insecure on Long Island and, to the best of our ability, provide for the humanitarian needs of our community. Our goals are to improve food security for families, sponsor programs that help families achieve self-sufficiency, and educate the public about the root causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island.

Legacy

Long Island Cares – The Harry Chapin Food Bank has been on a mission to feed Long Islanders facing food insecurity and address its root causes since our founding by the late Harry Chapin in 1980.

Putting Our Mission and Vision Into Action

By putting our mission and vision into action, Long Island Cares distributes more than 16 million pounds of food annually, the equivalent of 13.3 million meals for our neighbors across Long Island.

While this impact is significant, the need remains great. We remain committed to serving our communities for as long as that need exists.
