Hunger Action Month

Food Should Never Be An Impossible Choice

At Long Island Cares, we believe that no one should have to make the impossible choice between food and other critical needs like medicine, housing, or transportation.

That’s why, this month, we’re teaming up with Feeding America to take part in Hunger Action Month!

What is Hunger Action Month?

It’s the time of year where food banks around the US come together to raise awareness and inspire action to help people faced with those impossible hunger choices.

All September long, we are calling on YOU to make a difference in your community!

Not sure how you can make a difference? Well, you’ve come to the right place!

You can make a difference by donating to Long Island Cares. Donations are the fuel of charitable organizations. They keep the wheels of change rolling in the right direction! By giving a gift, you are directly supporting those in need!

Here’s how your donations help:

● Allow Long Island Cares to purchase food for our neighbors in need! Every $10= 5 meals for a family in need!
● Keep our mobile service programs on the road! Programs like Hope for the Homeless, Supporting our Seniors, our Breakfast Food Truck, and our mobile school pantries!
● Support our over 340+ Member Agencies who fight hunger on the front lines every day!
● Make the world a better place!

Check out our website for all the ways your donations help.

For those interested in fighting hunger in person, show your support by volunteering with Long Island Cares!

Volunteering is a great way to give back to your community, and it’s fun too! Come alone, bring friends, families, or coworkers, and make a day of it!

You can volunteer in our warehouse sorting donated food, packing up bags of food for our school meal programs, or even work in our office!

When you volunteer with Long Island Cares, you can go home knowing that you made a real difference in the life of someone in need!

Volunteer now!

Another way to celebrate Hunger Action Month is to host a food drive or fundraiser! Hold it in person or virtually! If you go the in-person route, we’ll provide you with boxes and large posters for you to use! And if needed, we even offer both drop-off and pick-up services!

If going virtual is more your style, that’s fine too! It’s easy to set up, expands your reach outside of your local community, and can bring people in from all over the US! Our most successful online food drive had participants from 27 states!

Whether you choose online or in person, your actions will help put food on the table of those that need it most! Get started with your food drive today!

You also can contribute this month by spreading awareness about hunger on Long Island. Only by understanding the problem can we fix it! For millions of people in America, a daily meal isn’t a choice between different dishes. It’s a choice between food and other crucial needs—like medicine, electricity, or childcare. But we can change that by spreading awareness!

Check out how at Feeding America.

Over 250,000 food insecure people live on Long Island, including 67,000 children. These numbers are shocking. It’s critical that everyone understands just how great the need is. All of us must Take Action Against Hunger.

But when should I get started?

I’m glad you asked! Get started today of course!

It’s easy! Talk to friends and family, pick a date to volunteer or host a food drive, fill out the forms online and you’re on your way to great success!

So, there you have it! Hunger Action Month in a nutshell! You have all the tools you need to get started! Now get out there and let’s make a difference! Together we can end-hunger on Long Island!
