Educating students for a better tomorrow
Student Hunger Advocacy Coalition (S.H.A.C.)
Students ages 6-18 can sign up for monthly educational sessions hosted by the Long Island Cares Community Outreach staff. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the needs within their community and how they can help their neighbors in need. Education-based service hours are available for student participation upon request.

Students will be able to learn all the phases of creating and maintaining a community garden. Our Community Gardens contribute to the increase in the availability of fresh fruit and vegetables for Long Island Cares clients. Participants will be provided hands-on experience from Long Island Cares’ Master Gardener. Projects are at our Veterans Garden in Huntington Station and our Corporate Community Garden in Hauppauge (for Student Groups of 5 or more people).

Introduction to the programs and services offered by Long Island Cares. Students will explore the root causes of hunger and how it impacts their community. Participants will identify needs in their community and discuss what steps can be taken to make a difference to those in need. Sessions are offered virtually and in person at the Long Island Cares Center for Community Engagement in Hauppauge. All Hunger 101 sessions are approximately 1 hour unless stated otherwise.

Designed to get teens (ages 14-18) new to employment job-ready. Our program covers an introduction to job readiness skills, including resume and interview tips, age-appropriate job leads, professional communication, and more. Teens will walk away with the tools and confidence needed for their first job experience and a successful start to their career path.
