On any given night, thousands of Long Islanders are without a safe, stable place to call home. Families sleeping in cars. Children unsure where they will go after school. Veterans who once protected our country now seeking warmth and a meal at a soup kitchen.
This isn’t t a bad dream. It is the reality many people face right here on Long Island. These aren’t outsiders; they are part of our neighborhoods.
At Long Island Cares, we believe in showing up. We believe that no one should be left behind, and that access to food and basic necessities can help people take their next step forward. That belief is what drives our Hope for the Homeless program and the outreach van that brings support directly to people experiencing homelessness.
Hope for the Homeless is designed for individuals who are unhoused or in emergency shelters. Our outreach van travels to locations across Long Island to meet people where they are, instead of asking them to come to us.
The van distributes shelf-stable food that is easy to carry and doesn’t require cooking, along with hygiene and sanitary items that many people do not have regular access to. During the colder months, clean socks and gloves are also provided to help protect against harsh weather.
These items may seem small, but they make a real difference when you are living without stability.
For people experiencing homelessness, access to food is often unpredictable. Missing meals makes it harder to focus on finding work, keeping appointments, or addressing health needs. Spending limited money on food can also mean having less for medical care or other essentials.
Through Hope for the Homeless, food often becomes the first point of connection. It creates an opportunity for conversation, trust, and continued outreach.
In addition to street outreach, Long Island Cares works with shelters and outreach teams who support individuals experiencing homelessness every day. By supplying food and essential items, we help these partners continue their work without added strain.
This approach ensures that support reaches people quickly and respectfully.
Hope for the Homeless relies on community support to keep the van stocked and on the road. Donations of funds, shelf-stable food, and hygiene products make this work possible. Volunteers also play an important role in preparing and distributing supplies.
Hope for the Homeless is rooted in a simple belief. Everyone deserves access to food, dignity, and care, no matter where they are in their journey.
Together, we can continue meeting our neighbors where they are and offering hope when it is needed most.
