Long Island Cares – The Harry Chapin Regional Food Bank has been on a mission to feed Long Islanders facing food insecurity and address its root causes since our founding by the late Harry Chapin in 1980.

Volunteer Award Nomination
Our volunteers make an impact in countless ways, many of which cannot be measured by numbers alone. While years of service, hours volunteered, and accomplishments are important, these awards are intended to recognize the full picture of a volunteer’s contribution. We encourage nominations that speak to a volunteer’s character, dedication, leadership, kindness, reliability, and the impact they have on neighbors, fellow volunteers, staff, and the community. Whether they work behind the scenes or on the front lines, we want to celebrate the individuals who help bring our mission to life every day.
Neighbor’s Champion Award
(Certificates for Satellite Pantry Volunteers)
Description:
Recognizes a volunteer who shows extraordinary compassion and care toward neighbors, helping create a welcoming and respectful environment and consistently uplifting and supporting neighbors with dignity and respect.
Nomination Criteria:
- Demonstrates empathy and kindness in client interactions
- Goes out of their way to assist individuals/families in need
- Promotes dignity and respect in food distribution
- Receives positive feedback from coordinators, clients or peers
Rising Star Awards
(Certificate(s))
Description:
Honors a newer volunteer who has quickly become an essential part of the team through enthusiasm, reliability, initiative, and commitment.
Nomination Criteria:
- Less than 12 months of service
- Demonstrates strong engagement and willingness to learn
- Takes initiative without being asked
- Builds positive relationships with staff and volunteers
Community Ambassador/Impact Award(s)
Description:
Recognizes a volunteer who actively promotes the food bank’s mission in the community.
Nomination Criteria:
- Recruits new volunteers or donors
- Represents the organization at events or outreach efforts
- Advocates for hunger relief awareness
- Builds partnerships or community connections
Above & Beyond Award
Description:
For a volunteer(s) who consistently exceeds expectations and steps up in critical moments. Celebrates long-term dedication and consistent service.
Nomination Criteria:
- Frequently volunteers for extra shifts or urgent needs
- Takes on responsibilities beyond their role
- Demonstrates exceptional dedication and flexibility
- Reliable during high-demand periods (holidays, emergencies)
These volunteers will include Mobile Outreach and warehouse drivers as well as volunteer packing leads.
Unsung Hero Award
Description:
Honors a behind-the-scenes volunteer whose work is essential but often goes unrecognized.
Nomination Criteria:
- Works in less visible roles (admin support)
- Highly dependable and detail-oriented
- Rarely seeks recognition
- Strong contributions acknowledged by staff/peers
