Job Description:

The Content Specialist develops and executes compelling content and brand communications that tell the story of Long Island Cares’ mission, impact, programs, partnerships, and the neighbors we serve. Reporting directly to the Senior Director of Marketing, this role serves as a primary writer, storyteller, and brand communications resource, translating marketing strategy into strong campaigns, publications, digital content, fundraising communications, and brand-awareness initiatives.

Essential Functions:

• Proactively identify, research, and develop compelling stories, testimonials, and content that demonstrate Long Island Cares’ mission, programs, partnerships, and community impact.
• Conduct interviews and transform program information, statistics, impact data, and individual experiences into clear, engaging, audience-focused communications.
• Develop and edit original content for campaigns, donor communications, digital channels, publications, events, community outreach, and internal communications while maintaining a consistent organizational voice, tone, and brand narrative.
• Translate strategic brand direction from the Senior Director of Marketing into campaign concepts, key messages, headlines, calls to action, storytelling, and communications deliverables across multiple channels.
• Identify and support brand-awareness opportunities that strengthen Long Island Cares’ visibility and communicate its mission, programs, partnerships, thought leadership, and role as Long Island’s regional food bank.
• Support audience and marketing research and apply audience insights to strengthen brand positioning, messaging, campaigns, and communications effectiveness.
• Write and manage website and digital content in coordination with the Communications Specialist, who leads website optimization, SEO/AEO strategy, search performance, and technical digital execution.
• Collaborate with the Communications Specialist to optimize content based on recommended keywords, search intent, audience needs, digital best practices, and performance insights.
• Develop and coordinate written content for newsletters, the Annual Report, impact publications, brochures, fact sheets, presentations, advertising, campaign materials, and other organizational communications.
• Support major brand deliverables from concept through completion by gathering information, developing messaging and copy, coordinating content and assets, and ensuring alignment with strategic direction.
• Develop persuasive, mission-centered content supporting fundraising campaigns, direct mail, digital appeals, donor communications, sponsorships, events, stewardship, and special initiatives in partnership with Development.
• Develop and maintain an organization-wide editorial/content calendar and centralized Story Bank; proactively work across departments to identify upcoming stories, milestones, campaigns, partnerships, and awareness opportunities.
• Proofread and edit organizational materials for grammar, clarity, accuracy, voice, tone, messaging, and brand consistency.
• Build strong working relationships across departments and attend programs, events, volunteer activities, and community initiatives when appropriate to gather firsthand content and identify storytelling opportunities.
• Manage multiple content and brand projects simultaneously, meet deadlines, and independently move assigned work from concept through completion.
• Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Required Skills & Abilities:

• Exceptional writing, editing, proofreading, interviewing, and storytelling skills with the ability to adapt messaging for different audiences and platforms.
• Strong understanding of brand voice, audience needs, content marketing, integrated campaigns, and mission-driven communications.
• Ability to translate brand and marketing strategy into compelling campaign concepts, messaging, and communications deliverables.
• Ability to independently develop ideas and identify storytelling, content, and brand-awareness opportunities.
• Strong creative judgment, project management, organization, attention to detail, and follow-through.
• Ability to collaborate effectively across departments and with digital, fundraising, media, creative, and leadership partners.
• Familiarity with digital content best practices and the ability to work effectively with an SEO/digital specialist on website, search, email, and social content.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and familiarity with content management, email marketing, social media, project management, and creative/content-development tools.

Education & Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, public relations, journalism, English, or a related field preferred; equivalent relevant experience may be considered.
• Three to five years of relevant experience in content development, marketing, communications, journalism, public relations, brand communications, or a related field preferred.
• Demonstrated experience developing content across digital, print, campaigns, publications, and organizational communications.
• Experience with brand-awareness, integrated marketing, public-awareness, nonprofit, fundraising, or mission-driven communications strongly preferred.
• Portfolio or work samples demonstrating strong writing, storytelling, campaign content, and brand communications expertise preferred.

Physical Requirements:

• Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
• Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
• Ability to attend programs, events, and off-site assignments as needed to gather content.
• Valid NYS Driver’s License.
