Gus’ Retail Rescue Program

Gus’ Retail Rescue Program

According to Feeding America, each year, 119 billion pounds of food is wasted in the United States. That equates to 130 billion meals and more than $408 billion in food thrown away each year.

To lower that number, Long Island Cares has partnered with local supermarkets and other food retailers to regularly receive donations of food nearing expiration dates but still perfectly safe to eat.

The food is rescued from retailers by Long Island Cares trucks and then delivered to, and safely stored in, refrigerated Gus’ Retail Rescue locations and organized by volunteers at our Hauppauge, Bethpage, and Lindenhurst First Stop Food Pantries.

The products then make their way into the pantry or are picked up by Long Island Cares’ Member Agencies for their visitors to enjoy.

Thanks to the incredible support Long Island Cares receives from our retail donors, a majority of the food donated through Gus’ Retail Rescue is in the hands of our neighbors within 24 hours.

Please reach out to Michele Jackson at [email protected] or 631-582-3663 ext.304 for more information.
