    WBAB/WBLI TOUCH-A-TRUCK COLLECTS 3,344 POUNDS OF FOOD TO SUPPORT LONG ISLAND CARES, THE HARRY CHAPIN FOOD BANK

    touch-a-truckHAUPPAUGE, NY – Monday, November 7, 2016 – While thousands of children and families walked among the many trucks and other vehicles on display at the WBAB and WBLI “Touch-a-Truck” event at the Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove on Saturday, November 5th there was another purpose in having children sit in Fire Trucks, Ambulances and other unique and exciting trucks, which was to help feed the hungry on Long Island this holiday season.

    Long Island’s #1 Rock station also partnered with Long Island’s regional food bank, and visitors donated 3,344 pounds of non-perishable food items for Long Island Cares, The Harry Chapin Food Bank in just a few short hours.  “The combination of a perfect fall day, a great variety of vehicles of all shapes and sizes and a huge turnout made this Touch-A-Truck the best ever.  We’re thankful that Long Island families not only choose to spend their Saturday with us, but that they heeded the call to bring much-needed donations to assist Long Island Cares in their mission to help those in need,” said John Shea, Vice President and General Manager, of Cox Media Group Long Island.

    An estimated 316,000 Long Islanders including 89,000 children are impacted by domestic hunger and high food insecurity according to Long Island Cares.  “Events like Touch-A-Truck are so important to the mission of the regional food bank and our efforts to make sure that people in need have nutritious food by raising awareness of the issue in our local communities,” said William Gonyou, Food Drive and Community Events Manager for Long Island Cares.  “The 3,344 pounds of food donated will provide more than 2,600 meals for people struggling with food insecurity this holiday season.
