9TH ANNUAL CANSTRUCTION® LONG ISLAND DESIGN/BUILD COMPETITION TO BENEFIT LONG ISLAND CARES
HAUPPAUGE – Long Island Cares will once again be a beneficiary of Canstruction® Long Island, Inc.’s annual design/build competition to help end hunger on Long Island. The competition, in its ninth year, will take place October 29, 2015. Twelve teams from the Architecture, Engineering and Construction industry, as well as students interested in the field, are competing by creating colossal sculptures made entirely from cans of non-perishable food. Canstruction® Long Island, Inc. then donates the cans of food to Long Island Cares, The Harry Chapin Food Bank and other local food banks.
This year’s competing professional firms are H2M architects + engineers, LKB Consulting Engineers, The Hart Group, John W. Baumgarten Architect, PC, Spector Group, Rosenbaum Design Group, The Interior Design Society Long Island Chapter/Nassau Community College Interior Design Students, and Lines & Designs 3D and Long Island reSound. The student teams are Temple Sinai Youth Group, Chi’s Martial Arts, Sacred Heart Academy and Friends Academy.
“Canstruction Long Island is one of the most unique and creative events to support feeding the hungry on Long Island,” said Paule Pachter, Long Island Cares Inc.’s Chief Executive Officer. “It brings together an extremely talented group of professionals whose talents are only matched by their concern for people in need. All of the food used in building the structures is distributed to feed the hungry and arrives just in time for the holiday season when the need for food is at high demand.”
“We are thrilled to be holding our ninth Canstruction® Long Island Design/Build Competition to help feed the more than 300,000 people in our area who face hunger every day,” said Tracy Lobdell, Executive Director, Canstruction® Long Island, Inc. “This event is a way for the A/E/C industry to serve its fellow Long Islanders by helping to combat hunger.”
The event takes place at RXR Plaza in Uniondale, NY. The sculptures are on display to the public October 30 through November 11 from 8 AM to 6 PM. Admission to the exhibit is a donation of at least one can of food. The cans donated as admission will each serve as a vote for the “People’s Choice” award. For the duration of the exhibit, collection bins will be located next to each structure, and visitors vote for the “People’s Choice” winner by placing their food donations in the bin next to their favorite structure.
