Hands-On Gardening Experience for Students and Volunteers

Community Gardens: Grow, Learn & Give Back

Hands-On Gardening Experience for Students and Volunteers

Long Island Cares’ Community Gardens provide students with a hands-on opportunity to grow fresh herbs and vegetables while learning about sustainable food systems and the fight against hunger. Everything harvested from our gardens directly benefits Long Island Cares’ clients, helping to increase access to nutritious produce for families in need.

Students will work alongside garden staff to plant, maintain, and harvest seasonal crops—building both practical skills and a deeper understanding of food insecurity on Long Island.

What You’ll Grow and Learn:

  • Hands-on experience in community gardening
  • The impact of fresh produce in hunger relief efforts
  • Gardening techniques, plant care, and seasonal harvesting
  • Teamwork and service through meaningful volunteer work

Crops Grown Include:
Arugula, basil, bell peppers, bok choy, carrots, chives, collards, cucumbers, eggplants, garlic, green beans, jalapeños, kale, lettuce, onions, oregano, potatoes, pumpkin, radish, scallions, Swiss chard, and tomatoes.
