What It Means To Be The Regional Food Bank

Since 1980, Long Island Cares, Inc. has had the distinction of being the regional food bank for Long Island. This designation was enhanced in 1994 when we were awarded funding from New York State to adminster the Hunger Prevention and Nutrition Assistance Program, which allows us to purchase nutritious food and provide funding to hundreds of eligible organizations that support their infrastructure needs. Today, the HPNAP program continues to support Long Island Cares as the regional food bank for Nassau and Suffolk County along with seven other regional food banks in New York City, Elmira, Westchester, Albany, Buffalo, Syracuse and Rochester. This year, we will provide nearly $200,000 to eligible organizations to support their operations on Long Island including, a sub-allocation of funding to our region’s popular food rescue organization.

In addition, Long Island Cares has the distinction of being designated as the regional food bank by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Emergency Food Assistance Program. As such, we will bring more than 3 million pounds of commodity foods to Long Island to support our 574 member agencies in assisting the 316,000 Long Islanders impacted by domestic hunger and high food insecurity. Our administration of the USDA TEFAP program will also assist emergency responder oganizations such as the American Red Cross Long Island Chapter with responding to any crisis that requires the distribution of emergency food.
We’ve come along way in the past 36 years towards solving hunger on Long Island, but we have a long road ahead. With your continued support, volunteerism and understanding of our role in the Long Island Region, we will continue to work together to insure that our children, families, veterans, seniors, and others in need of food don’t have to worry about where their next meal is coming from.
