Following recent media coverage about food banks sometimes needing to close due to a shortage of food donations, we at Long Island Cares wanted to be sure our member agencies and any concerned neighbors know that we will not be shutting our doors anytime soon.
Please be assured that Long Island Cares, Inc.-The Harry Chapin Food Bank is not closing for the month of January or at anytime due to a lack of food donations this holiday season. Our trucks will be out on the road delivering emergency food, personal care products, pet supplies, household items and other support to our 584 community-based member agencies including the food pantries, soup kitchens and our own satellite locations in Freeport, Lindenhurst and Huntington Station…. Due to the continued generosity of Long Islanders, the business and corporate community, private donors and others, we have the necessary resources to assist people in need as we have done for the past 36 years. More than 60 students will be at our Hauppauge warehouse this week during school break to help us sort and repack all of the food donations that keep arriving daily, and we have more than 600,000 pounds of food in our inventory.
