Happy March, hunger fighters! As you may know, we’ve got a lot going on here at Long Island Cares this month. If you’d like to get involved, read on and choose the hunger-fighting method that fits you best. Keep the change going!
1. Our Annual Spring Food Drive kicks off today! Summer is a favorite time of the year for many students – but for the 70,000 kids on Long Island struggling with food insecurity and hunger, it makes things worse. Once summer starts, school meals stop, and those kids and their families have an even harder time finding meals. That’s where you come in. We want to collect 100,000 healthy meals for those families now, so that we’re prepared for summer when it arrives, and we need your help! If you’re a student, teacher, administrator, or someone else involved with a local school and would like to help us get ready for summer, talk to your school about participating and register for the Spring Food Drive today.
2. Come to one of our special events this month, or drop off a non-perishable donation at one of the drop off centers! We’re having dinner with Chef Tom Schaudel, wading in deliciousness at the Chocolate Expo, stopping by local job fairs and more! Find out where and when we’ll be near you!
3. The Harry Chapin Practice-A-Thon starts today, and ends March 31st! If you’re a student musician on Long Island, this month you can use your talents to fight hunger just like our founder did. Download the participant packet, ask everyone you know to pledge at least a penny for every minute you practice this month, and then send the money you raise to us at the end of the month. The more you practice, the more money you raise, and the more neighbors in need Long Island Cares can help!
4. Spread the word when we’re supporting the community near you! Asparagus’s Children’s Breakfast Food Truck will be distributing healthy breakfast to local children in need throughout Long Island all month long, and partner organizations will be visiting our satellite locations to support neighbors in need throughout March as well. Check out the Children’s Breakfast Food Truck schedule and this month’s Partner Organization Visits schedule for details. Post on Facebook and Twitter to let the word out!
