Long Island Cares – The Harry Chapin Food Bank offers cooking, food safety and nutrition training workshops to our network of more than 590 emergency food provider member agencies. Through our classes, member agency food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and child care providers can learn and earn certificates in nutrition and food safety. As of July 1st 2015 all Long Island Cares member EFP’s are required by the New York State Department of Health in accordance with Long Island Cares Agency Agreement to attend Food Safety Sanitation & Nutrition Education Training Workshops during the contract year. Workshops are offered at our Hauppauge, Huntington Station, Hampton Bays & Freeport Long Island Cares Service Centers.

Guest Chef’s Fighting Hunger at Long Island Cares Our Nutrition Education staff and guest chefs offer scheduled cooking demonstrations and menu planning workshops which focus on providing healthy recipes and meal makeovers using local fresh produce, lean proteins, whole grains and other items distributed by our foodbank to soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters and community centers throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties. Staff dietitians incorporate educational nutrition guidelines to help reduce the risk of childhood obesity, curtail nutrition related diseases, promote healthy eating, food safety and shopping on a limited budget. Our guest chef’s are able to provide food preparation techniques and share their culinary skills with an attentive studio audience of pantry and soup kitchen staff and volunteers involved in feeding the hungry on Long Island. Having the ability to share recipes and dishes that can easily be created with food found in a local food pantry enhances our ability to define how good eating can be a part of solving food insecurity and that there’s more than one way to utilize a specific food or ingredient. Many of our kitchen studio demonstrations are filmed and shown on our website and various social media platforms.
