NALC Food Drive National Kickoff Features Olympian Sarah Hughes
Campbell's Donates 1 Million Pounds of Soup
Long
Island Cares met Sarah Hughes the other day. Yes, THAT Sarah
Hughes!
Sarah led the national kickoff for the 2003 National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive at a ceremony May 6 in Garden City, New York. Earlier in the day, Hughes appeared on NBC's "Today" program to promote the drive.
A highlight of the program at the Western Nassau Plant and Distribution Facility was the donation by Campbell Soup Company of 1 million pounds of canned soup to the drive. The soup will be distributed through national food networks, but three Long Island food organizations (including The Harry Chapin Food Bank at Long Island Cares) were provided with immediate donations. "It's crucial for everyone to help," Hughes said.
The ceremony kicked off scores of similar ceremonies throughout the nation to bring the May 10 drive to the public's attention. Among those speaking at the event was Robert Forney, president of America's Second Harvest, who highlighted the special need this year for donations.
After the press conference in Garden City, Sarah, Robert, and representatives from the Campbell Soup Company came out to see us in Hauppauge. Of course, we were thrilled to have them here at Long Island Cares and we are very grateful for their support.
