Long Island Cares’ School Tools Program gives school-age children from low-income families in Nassau and Suffolk Counties, New York, free school supplies to help make the beginning of the school year a positive experience. Started in 1999, this program is designed to give at-risk children the self-esteem that comes with being prepared to learn and feeling good about their education.
The free school supplies – such as backpacks, notebooks, planners, paper and binders – are distributed to Long Island Cares’ member agencies serving school-age children, as well as through our First Stop Pantries in Freeport, Huntington Station and Lindenhurst.
The supplies are donated and picked up by Long Island Cares or purchased by us at a substantial discount from funds provided by corporations, foundations and charitable organization grants. School Tools is not funded through any steady source and is completely dependent upon fundraising and supply donations. Since school supplies are consumables, we always need donated school supplies and funds to purchase them.
